15 Best Part-Time Jobs from Home in 2024

Not all part-time jobs are created equal. Truthfully, some of the most talked about jobs are multi-level marketing (MLM) or pyramid schemes in disguise. So we weeded through the different options and created our list of top part-time jobs from home.

As you browse the list, consider your background, knowledge base, skills, and interests. Then, see which of these jobs aligns best with you. You can use your skill set and passion to pull in extra income faster than you think!

Freelance Writing

Do you love to write? Are you knowledgeable about a particular subject matter? Freelance writing can be a very lucrative part-time job from home if you are looking to combine those two skill sets. Freelance writers write a variety of things from blog posts and newsletters to web page articles and email copy.

While you will likely find thousands of freelancing opportunities online, the most lucrative ones relate to niches or specific areas. For instance, if you have a background in medicine, you might find opportunities to write the monthly newsletter that local medical practices send out.

If you are worried that you haven’t chosen a niche, you can always develop this over time. The more you write on a variety of topics, the more apparent it will be to you which topics in which you shine as an expert and authority.

To get started with freelance writing, you can join the Freelance Writer Academy. Their beginner course is affordable to ensure that anyone who wants to join can. Plus, it will help walk you through everything that you need to learn to get started writing–including how to land your first client!

Virtual Assistant

Are you a task master? Do you love to keep things organized? If people are in awe of the way you operate your family calendar, you might love being a virtual assistant. Virtual assistants (VAs) are individuals who tackle a variety of administrative tasks for different clients. Some virtual assistants focus heavily on social media management. Other VAs do a variety of tasks from content marketing, customer support, performing market research, and even managing the day-to-day operations calendar of clients and businesses.

Some VA work is year-round, while other VAs might only be needed during particularly busy seasons. It simply depends on the work focus of your client. As a result, some VAs work for multiple clients. Others only want to dedicate a few hours a week to this part-time job from home, so they may only work with one client.

If you feel like the taskmaster part of you would be a good fit for VA work, Belay makes it simple to get started as a virtual assistant. This is a contractor network that will help you find clients that are a good match for your skill set and interest. Anyone who wants to earn about $18-$21 an hour while maintaining a flexible schedule should take a look!

Graphic Designer

Do you have an eye for design? Are you someone who doesn’t overlook even the smallest of details? There’s a good chance that you can find an opportunity to put these skills to work as a part-time graphic designer.

To get started as a graphic designer, you will have to consider the type of work that you want to do. Some designs take very active roles in designing stationery for weddings or signage for companies hosting events and retreats. Other designers, though, use platforms like Zazzle and Etsy to generate passive income by selling digital designs and downloads.

Julie Berninger earned more than $10,000 with her Etsy printables business and sat down with us to share different tips and tricks to get started. While she had to put in a considerable amount of work when she first started her business, she now enjoys this income as part of a passive income stream as her shop continues to grow and her designs continue to sell.

Childcare

Childcare is one of the most flexible part-time jobs around. With just a free hour or two per month, you can bring in extra income! What makes childcare such a fantastic part-time job is its flexibility. With how hectic families' schedules are, there's a good chance that a family could use your support–morning, noon, or night!

Some of the different childcare options include:

  • Occasional babysitting – This is perfect for someone with just a few free hours. You can offer to babysit during date nights or even just offer to be a backup babysitter in case a regular sitter has to cancel at the last minute.
  • After-school childcare – Some families need to bridge the gap between school dismissal time and their return from work. As a result, you might be able to host a neighborhood child for an hour or two after school during the week.
  • Parent’s helper services – Some families need to keep their kids entertained while they work remotely or tackle household jobs. That means that you can offer support regularly or even just as needs pop up.
  • Homeschool pod coordinators – With more and more families pursuing alternative schooling options for their children, different childcare opportunities are popping up more and more. As a homeschool pod coordinator, you can plan field trips, design curriculum, and help families come together for social events.

If you aren’t sure where to start looking for childcare jobs, Care.com is a tremendously helpful platform that can simplify the search. In addition to building connections related to childcare, you can also find gigs for senior care, tutoring, housekeeping, and even pet care.

Tutoring

If you think tutoring is only an option for current and former teachers, think again! Tutoring certainly is an excellent side gig for teachers, but they aren’t the only tutors out there. Oftentimes, adults with specialized backgrounds make for excellent tutors. Do you find yourself using higher mathematics at work? You might be a good candidate for tutoring high school math.

To see what might be a good fit for you, you can reach out to your local public library or school system. They often have lists of content areas that are frequently requested by students who need extra support. Then, you can decide if your skillset overlaps with any of those courses.

You also want to think outside the box. Academics aren’t the only subjects that families seek support with. Some students work with private athletic tutors or coaches, whereas other families seek out individuals who can work with their children specifically on study skills and organization.

There are many different ways to get started in your local community–from your local library to neighborhood social media groups. You can also use Care.com to take some of the guesswork out of where to begin as a tutor.

Elder Care

We have a rapidly aging population, and as a result, the need for elder care is skyrocketing. Some of this requires training and even certifications. However, many families are simply looking for someone to offer elder care in the form of keeping their elder company, helping with simple household tasks, or running errands.

You can find leads in community Facebook groups or on NextDoor, where people in the sandwich generation often post requests for occasional help with their aging parents.

Proofreading

Do you cringe when you spot grammatical errors at the supermarket? Do you notice the occasional typo in the book you checked out from the library? You likely have an eye for proofreading.

Proofreading definitely makes the list for easy part-time jobs from home. It can pay up to $45 an hour, depending on how technical the work is. You can get started finding clients and building your portfolio on platforms like Upwork, Proofreading Pal or you can even start your own freelance proofreading business

AirBnB Management

It’s no secret that thousands of people have turned to Airbnb as a means to make money. But you may be under the impression that it requires a lot of active work outside the home to manage an Airbnb.

Amazingly, more and more people are learning how to manage Airbnb rentals remotely. One couple who brought in more than six figures shared details with us on how they pull in this income without setting foot in the homes on a regular basis. Of course, to bring in this kind of income, they did have to frontload the process. However, once they assembled their team, they were able to manage their Airbnbs remotely while traveling and living their regular lives.

Real Estate Investing

It’s true that sometimes being a landlord can be a full-time gig and then some. But there are other ways where you can earn income through real estate without dedicating much time to the process at all.

We are big fans of Arrived Homes thanks to the simplicity of the tool, the responsiveness of the company, and the variety of investment options. See our full review of the platform to learn why we were early adopters of this real estate investment tool and why we still use them today!

Social Media Manager

Let’s be honest. We all spend more time than we care to admit scrolling through social media. Some people truly have a knack for creating content and using these platforms. If that’s you, then you could find a lot of success as a social media manager.

Social media managers review user engagement to see which content draws in audiences. They also look at the data to identify trends. Then, they plan future campaigns to try to widen the reach and grow a brand’s audience.

One way that people get started with this side hustle is to offer their services to a local business that might have a fledgling Facebook page. You will be surprised how quickly requests for your services can spread via word-of-mouth referrals!

YouTube Content Creator

Another way to mix pleasure with business is to create content on YouTube! Just like social media manager work, this job isn’t for everyone. However, YouTube continues to be one of the most lucrative online platforms.

Danie Jay, a full-time YouTube creator, actually shared four different ways for the Marriage Kids and Money community to earn more than $10,000 a month on YouTube. Even a fraction of that income could be life-changing!

Bookkeeping

Bookkeeping is consistently ranked as one of the best part-time jobs from home because of its flexibility and timeless nature. No matter how much businesses evolve, business owners are always going to need some type of recordkeeping. If you have a keen eye for numbers, virtual business keeping could be a very lucrative part-time gig.

Tiffani Higgins is one example of someone who turned bookkeeping into a bigger income stream than she could have imagined. She shares how she earned $5,000 a month and kept a flexible schedule that allowed her to put her family first. If you want to learn more, you can check out the Stay At Home Bookkeeper Academy.

If you'd prefer not to start your own bookkeeping business, look at companies like Belay that hire out contractors for bookkeeping. You may not make as much money if the business isn't yours, but you'll surely spend fewer hours working on sales and marketing efforts.

Medical Coding and Billing

Medical coding is a part-time gig that can lead to a lot of possibilities. In fact, as coders become more experienced, they can increase their income significantly. Coders can transition into peer reviewers, supervisors, or auditors. This is particularly helpful for someone who might want to work part-time when their kids are little and then resume a full-time role once their kids are at school during the day.

Some medical coders have a background in healthcare. But you also have the option to pick up a certification to grow your skills. You can earn a Medical Coding Specialist certificate in as little as six months. This background is helpful, but many companies will hire coders without experience.

To explore the possibilities, you can look at healthcare companies like UnitedHealth Group

Pet Sitting

Man’s best friend can also be BFFs with your bank account. Just ask Vee Weir who pulled in an extra $10,000 a year by pet sitting. Pet sitting is an excellent part-time gig because you can customize it to fit your schedule.

Some pet sitters prefer to schedule consistent clients, working with their animals weekly or even daily. Other times, though, people pick up occasional jobs as neighbors and friends take vacations or travel for work.

You can work local connections through social media or even word-of-mouth. Of course, with tools like Rover, it’s easier than ever to try out pet sitting to see how it might work for you!

Best Part-Time Jobs from Home FAQ

After reviewing our list of the best part-time jobs from home, you likely have some questions about these jobs. We rounded up answers to everything we think you need to know before you dive into the world of part-time work. Let’s take a look!

What is the difference between part-time and contract work?

Did you know that not all side gigs are the same? There’s a fairly significant difference between side hustles and part-time workers.

Someone who does contract work–sometimes called an independent contractor–is different than someone who works part-time. A contractor is self-employed. Don’t let this throw you off. You don’t need a big business with employees. Instead, many contractors are sole proprietorships, meaning that you are the business and the business owner! The contractor provides services to a client in exchange for a fee. This may be a one-time gig or it may be multiple projects on an ongoing basis.

On the other hand, a part-time employee is someone who works for a company just like a full-time employee would. The biggest difference is that they are only offered a limited amount of hours, making their work part-time. In the case of part-time work, the employer has control over when the work is done and often provides the equipment and other parameters.

Many gigs like freelance writing and virtual assistant work are actually contract jobs. You’ll know for sure that you’re a contractor if you are issued a 1099 at tax time. Of course, you will likely want to clarify this upfront when you first start one of these part-time jobs from home.

How can I get health insurance if I work part-time?

Is health insurance a reason why you’re not considering taking the leap into part-time work? You might be surprised to hear the different ways that you can get health insurance as a part-time worker.

The first thing you need to know is that employers are not required to offer you health insurance as a part-time worker. It’s even less likely (though not impossible!) to snag this perk as a contract worker. However, some companies–especially in the medical field–may offer this as a perk.

You can also obtain health care coverage on the marketplace. Learn more about the type of coverage you might qualify for based on your income and household size at HealthCare.Gov.

Can I make $1,000 per month working from home?

Absolutely! One of the topic questions that people ask when they wonder about part-time jobs from home is “How much money can I make?” That’s a fantastic question! It truly depends.

What causes such a wide fluctuation in how much money you can earn at a part-time gig? There are many factors. For example, some people may be willing to dedicate 20-plus hours per week, while other people may only have 5 hours a week to work.

Additionally, the type of work that you do can impact how much money you earn. Work that is more in demand or requires a more specific skill set can sometimes have a better payout. If you are freelance writing in the medical field and you have a medical degree, you will find a wider variety of options and higher payouts.

Also, some of this part-time work can snowball over time. When you are first getting started, you might have to start with very competitive rates. However, as you establish a client base and a favorable reputation, you may be able to increase your rates.

Finally, some of the part-time jobs from home can be more passive. Those jobs tend to start slower but can then have an explosive payout. For instance, an Etsy shop or someone who does on-demand t-shirt design might only make $50 or $100 in their first few months. However, as your shop goes and as you get more in tune with popular niches, you can fairly quickly double, quadruple, or even 10x your income.

What are the best ways to make passive income from home?

There is one major thing to remember about passive income before we discuss some of the best ways to generate it. Passive income takes active work–at least initially! Everyone loves the idea of making money while they sleep, and we don’t blame them. The catch is that in virtually all instances, setting up a passive income stream requires upfront work.

So what might that look like in terms of the best part-time jobs from home? Here are some of the top-ranking passive income streams you could try out:

  • Creating a course
  • Selling digital designs
  • Renting out a parking space (or other properties)
  • Setting up affiliate marketing
  • Selling stock photos
  • Building an app
  • Creating a print-on-demand store

Let’s consider what a print-on-demand store involves. There are some truly inspiring success stories about these shops that might catch your eye as you scroll through different online news stories. But before these sellers can bring in thousands of dollars a month in passive income, they have to lay the groundwork for their shop. Some of the upfront work involves building a website or joining a selling platform, doing research on your niche, choosing a printer to work with, and creating and testing different designs. Once your business starts to take off, though, the work does indeed become much more passive.
