Key Takeaways on Your Job Is Not Your Life

Here are my top three takeaways from my conversation with Simone Stolzoff.

Recognize the Problem

Before we can start to reclaim our lives from our work, we need to first recognize that it’s an issue.

“We exist on this planet to do more than provide economic value.” That quote from Simone stuck with me.

Once we realize that we are more than our work, we can start to make changes.

Take Time for Reflection

Do you ever find yourself with a moment of free time… thinking about what to do and then reflexively doing more work? I have.

Well, it’s probably because you and I haven’t thought enough about what else we want our lives to look like outside of work.

  • Do we want to be better spouses?
  • Better parents?
  • More thoughtful friends?
  • Find more time for our aging parents?
  • A volunteer in our community?
  • An author?
  • An athlete?
  • A musician?

I just named a bunch of stuff I might want to be outside of my work, but it's time for you to do the same. Take 10 minutes to think about who you want to be outside of work. Write down some ideas and get inspired.

Diversify Who You Are

It’s time to take some action.

As Simone suggested in our interview, start leaning into activities and interests that don’t require you to prove your economic worth or value.

He used the example of pick-up basketball. You’re creating community, taking care of your health, making friends and no one on the court really cares about your work or how much economic value you’re providing.

Decide what small step you could take to diversify who you are outside of work today. And pursue it.

Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.”
