Choosing between Monarch Money and Rocket Money is not really about choosing between two budgeting apps.

It's about choosing the type of financial life you want to build.

Rocket Money is designed to help people take back control of their spending, identify forgotten subscriptions, and become more aware of where their money is going.

Monarch Money is designed to help people build long-term wealth through budgeting, goal planning, net worth tracking, and collaboration with a spouse or partner.

I've tested both platforms extensively. While I purchased Rocket Money Premium specifically for this review, my wife Nicole and I have used Monarch Money almost every day for more than three years to manage our family finances.

That experience has given me a unique perspective.

Rocket Money solves an important problem.

Monarch Money solves a much bigger one.

In this comparison, I'll walk you through the strengths of each platform, explain who I think each app is best for, and share which one I would recommend depending on your stage of life.

If someone asked me which app I'd recommend without any additional context, my answer would be Monarch Money.

Rocket Money is an excellent app for helping people become more aware of their spending and subscriptions. If your finances feel out of control and you want a simple, user-friendly way to understand where your money is going, Rocket Money is a solid place to start.

But if you're looking for a budgeting app that can grow with you through marriage, kids, homeownership, investing, and retirement planning, I believe Monarch Money is the better long-term choice.

That's why it's the budgeting app my wife Nicole and I continue to use every day.

Monarch Money and Rocket Money take different approaches to personal finance. Monarch focuses on long-term budgeting and wealth building, while Rocket Money emphasizes spending awareness and subscription management.

Who Should Choose Monarch Money vs. Rocket Money?

Although both apps help you manage your money, they're built for different types of users.

After testing Rocket Money Premium and using Monarch Money with my family for more than three years, here's who I think each app serves best.

Choose Rocket Money if…

  • You're brand new to managing your finances.
  • You feel overwhelmed by your spending.
  • You want to identify forgotten subscriptions.
  • You prefer a simple, mobile-first experience.
  • You're looking for a quick way to understand where your money is going.

Rocket Money is designed to help people take back control of their spending. If you've never used a budgeting app before or you simply want to become more aware of your finances, it's an approachable place to start.

Choose Monarch Money if…

  • You budget with a spouse or partner.
  • You're saving for long-term goals.
  • You want to track your net worth.
  • You're building wealth over time.
  • You want a budgeting app that can grow with you for years.

This is where Monarch separates itself.

My wife Nicole and I don't just use Monarch to track our spending. We use it to plan vacations, save for our kids' education, prepare for retirement, monitor our net worth, and guide our bi-weekly money dates.

In other words, Rocket Money helps you understand today's finances.

Monarch Money helps you intentionally build tomorrow's.

Monarch Money vs. Rocket Money: Feature Comparison

Rocket Money and Monarch Money both help you manage your finances, but they approach the job very differently.

Rocket Money focuses on simplicity. It helps you understand your spending, manage subscriptions, and gain quick financial awareness through an intuitive, mobile-first experience.

Monarch Money takes a broader approach. In addition to budgeting, it helps you track your net worth, save for long-term goals, collaborate with your spouse or partner, and build a financial plan that can grow with you over time.

Here's how the two apps compare across the features I believe matter most.

Budgeting

Monarch Money's budgeting screen makes it easy to track monthly spending, manage rollover budgets, and save for long-term financial goals.

If budgeting is your primary reason for downloading a personal finance app, I believe Monarch Money is the better choice.

Rocket Money includes budgeting tools, but they're intentionally designed to be simple. You can create budget categories, monitor your monthly spending, and quickly see whether you're staying on track.

Rocket Money's budgeting dashboard keeps things simple, making it easy for first-time budgeters to track spending and stay within their monthly budget.

For someone who's never budgeted before, that's often enough.

Monarch takes budgeting several steps further.

My wife Nicole and I use Monarch every day to categorize transactions, monitor our monthly spending, and make adjustments throughout the month. Then, every other week, we sit down for a money date where we reconcile our transactions, review our budget, and talk through upcoming expenses and long-term financial goals.

We also use rollover budgeting to save for vacations, charitable giving, future vehicle purchases, and home improvement projects. Instead of starting from zero every month, our unused budget rolls forward and continues building toward the things that matter most to our family.

That flexibility has allowed our budgeting system to grow alongside our financial life.

I don't recommend budgeting apps based on where you are today. I recommend them based on where you want to be five or ten years from now.

For my family, Monarch has proven it's a budgeting app we can continue using as our goals become more ambitious.

🟧 My Pick: Monarch Money

Why: Flexible budgeting, rollover budgeting, and a platform that has supported our family's financial goals for more than three years.

Subscription Management

Rocket Money subscription management dashboard showing recurring monthly subscriptions and upcoming bills.
Rocket Money makes it easy to identify recurring subscriptions and take action on services you no longer use.

If subscription management is your biggest priority, this is one area where I think Rocket Money has the advantage.

Rocket Money was built around helping people identify recurring subscriptions, understand where their money is going each month, and cancel services they no longer use.

The experience is incredibly intuitive.

Within a few taps, you can see your recurring subscriptions, upcoming bills, and even request help canceling certain services directly through the app.

If you've ever looked at your credit card statement and thought, “Why am I still paying for this?” Rocket Money makes those recurring charges much easier to spot.

Monarch Money has improved significantly in this area over the past few years. It now identifies recurring merchants and subscriptions, making it much easier to review your monthly bills.

For my family, that's enough.

Because Nicole and I review our finances every other week, we're already aware of the subscriptions we're paying for and simply cancel them ourselves when we no longer need them.

But I know that's not everyone's reality.

If you have dozens of subscriptions or you rarely review your finances, Rocket Money's subscription management tools could save you both time and money.

🔴 My Pick: Rocket Money

Why: The best subscription management experience I've tested.

Best for subscription management and spending awareness.

Couples & Family Budgeting

As someone who's been married for nearly two decades, I don't think the best budgeting app is the one with the most features.

I think it's the one that helps you communicate better with your spouse.

That's one of the biggest reasons Nicole and I continue to use Monarch Money.

Every other week, we sit down for a money date and review our finances together. We reconcile transactions, talk about upcoming expenses, review our progress toward our financial goals, and make decisions about how we want to use our money in the weeks ahead.

Monarch makes those conversations easy.

We each have our own login, so we can review transactions, categorize spending, and stay up to date without sharing passwords or constantly asking each other to complete two-factor authentication.

Rocket Money has added household sharing, which is a nice improvement.

But after testing both platforms, I still believe Monarch offers the better experience for couples who want to actively manage their finances together.

For us, budgeting isn't just about tracking dollars.

It's about creating a shared vision for our family's future.

That's where Monarch stands apart.

💡 Why Monarch Works for Our Family

Nicole and I don't just use Monarch to track spending.

Every other week, we sit down for a money date where we review our budget, reconcile transactions, plan vacations, save for retirement, and talk through our family's financial goals.

The software is helpful, but the conversations are what have made the biggest difference for us. Check out our Monarch Money Tutorial geared toward families and couples.

🟧 My Pick: Monarch Money

Why: Separate logins, collaborative budgeting, and the perfect companion for our bi-weekly money dates.

Goal Planning

Monarch Money Goals dashboard showing progress toward retirement, education savings, vehicle replacement, and home improvement goals.
Monarch Money's Goals feature helps our family connect today's spending with long-term priorities like retirement, education, and future purchases.

This is one of the biggest differences between Monarch Money and Rocket Money.

Rocket Money does a great job helping you understand your spending today.

Monarch Money helps you plan for the future.

My wife Nicole and I currently use Monarch to save for retirement, our kids' college education, our next vehicle purchase, and home improvement projects. Seeing those goals alongside our monthly budget helps us make intentional spending decisions instead of wondering where our money went at the end of each month.

For example, if we're planning a family vacation or saving for a backyard project, we can see exactly how much progress we've made and adjust our spending if we're falling behind.

That changes the conversation.

Instead of asking, “Can we afford this?”

We're asking, “Does this purchase move us closer to or further from the goals we've already agreed on?”

Rocket Money isn't really designed for those conversations.

Its strength is helping people understand their current financial picture.

Monarch goes one step further by helping families connect today's spending with tomorrow's goals.

🟧 My Pick: Monarch Money

Why: Goal planning transforms budgeting from tracking expenses into intentionally building the life you want.

Net Worth Tracking

Monarch Money net worth dashboard showing investment accounts, assets, liabilities, and long-term net worth growth.
Monarch Money tracks our family's net worth alongside our budget and financial goals, giving us a complete picture of our finances in one place.

Both Rocket Money and Monarch Money allow you to track your net worth, but I find Monarch's experience more valuable because it's integrated into the way I already manage my finances.

Instead of using one app for budgeting and another for net worth tracking, Monarch brings everything together in one place.

That's actually why I stopped using Empower to track my net worth.

Today, Monarch tracks more than $2.2 million of our family's assets across 23 connected accounts. While the app certainly didn't create that wealth, it has given Nicole and me a clear picture of our financial progress over the past several years.

Seeing our net worth alongside our budget and long-term goals helps reinforce why we're making intentional financial decisions today.

Rocket Money also includes net worth tracking, and I think it does a solid job for someone who wants a quick snapshot of their finances.

For my family, though, I wanted more than a snapshot.

I wanted one place where I could budget, monitor our net worth, and plan for the future without jumping between multiple apps.

That's exactly what Monarch has become.

🟧 My Pick: Monarch Money

Why: Budgeting, net worth tracking, and long-term planning all work together in one platform, making it easier to stay focused on your financial goals.

Ease of Use

Both apps are easy to use, but I think they appeal to different types of users.

Rocket Money is one of the most intuitive personal finance apps I've tested. The interface is clean, navigation is straightforward, and it's easy to find the information you're looking for without feeling overwhelmed.

If you've never used a budgeting app before, Rocket Money has a gentler learning curve.

Monarch Money is also user-friendly, but it offers more features. Because of that, it takes a little more time to explore everything the platform can do.

In my experience, that extra functionality is worth it.

When I first switched from Mint, Monarch felt familiar enough that I could get started quickly, but it also gave me room to grow as my family's financial needs became more sophisticated.

Three years later, I'm still discovering useful features like AI-powered insights and improvements to goal planning.

If you're looking for the fastest path to understanding your spending, Rocket Money has the edge.

If you're looking for a platform that remains valuable as your financial life becomes more complex, I think Monarch strikes the better long-term balance between simplicity and capability.

🔴 My Pick: Rocket Money

Why: Rocket Money offers one of the cleanest, most intuitive user experiences I've seen for someone just getting started with personal finance.

My Final Recommendation

If you're trying to decide between Monarch Money and Rocket Money, here's my advice.

Choose Rocket Money if you're brand new to personal finance, your spending feels out of control, or you simply want an easy way to understand where your money is going and eliminate unnecessary subscriptions.

Choose Monarch Money if you're looking for a budgeting app that can grow with you over the next five, ten, or even twenty years.

That's the biggest difference between these two platforms.

Rocket Money helps you take back control of your spending.

Monarch Money helps you intentionally build a better financial future.

My wife Nicole and I don't use Monarch simply because it's a budgeting app.

We use it because it helps us have better conversations about money, stay aligned on our financial goals, and make confident decisions about our family's future.

That's far more valuable than tracking transactions.

If a friend asked me today which app I would recommend, I'd tell them this:

If you need a quick financial reset, start with Rocket Money.

If you want to build a financial system that will serve you and your family for years to come, choose Monarch Money.

That's exactly why it's still the budgeting app we use every day.

🟧 My Recommendation: Monarch Money

Why: It combines budgeting, goal planning, net worth tracking, and collaboration into one platform that has helped my family confidently manage our finances for more than three years.

Nicole and I have trusted Monarch to manage our family's finances for more than three years.
