When Kelan Kline walked out of the county jail for the last time, he nearly cried.

Not because he was scared. Because he felt free.

A former law enforcement officer turned entrepreneur, Kelan and his wife Brittany built a seven-figure online business through content creation, affiliate marketing, and digital products. Today, they run multiple businesses under their Savvy Media umbrella while homeschooling their kids, taking afternoon family walks, and working roughly 20-25 hours per week.

And the best part? None of it started with a business degree or a perfect plan.

It started with dissatisfaction.

Feeling Stuck in a “Good” Career

Kelan originally thought he had his life mapped out.

“My wife and I started dating in ninth grade,” Kelan told me. “She was gonna be a teacher. I was gonna be a law enforcement officer.”

After college, he became a jail deputy. On paper, the job looked great: stable income, excellent benefits, pension, healthcare, job security.

But internally, something felt off.

“You're around negativity all day and nights and weekends working,” Kelan said. “I just saw the writing on the wall of like, we want a family and this is just not a good situation to have a family in.”

Like many aspiring solopreneurs, Kelan wasn’t running toward entrepreneurship at first. He was running away from a life that no longer fit him.

The Income Report That Changed Everything

Around 2016, Kelan stumbled across income reports from personal finance blogger Michelle Schroeder-Gardner of Making Sense of Cents.

Those reports opened his eyes to a completely different possibility.

“She was making over $100K a month,” Kelan said. “And I was like, man, if she can make $100K a month, imagine just making 5% of that. I just want to make $5K a month from home.”

That simple realization sparked a conversation with Brittany around their dinner table.

What if they built something online together?

The result became The Savvy Couple, a website focused on helping families save money, make money, and build financial freedom.

Kelan brought the income growth and investing mindset. Brittany brought frugality and organization. Together, they built a brand that resonated with families across the country.

Why Their Emergency Fund Gave Them Confidence

Before fully diving into entrepreneurship, Kelan and Brittany made a smart financial move first: they built a six-month emergency fund.

“That was our runway,” Kelan said. “If I don't make any money for six months, maybe this isn't going to work out.”

That financial cushion gave them the emotional confidence to experiment.

Kelan supplemented their income teaching English online through VIPKid while learning blogging, SEO, and affiliate marketing on nights and weekends.

For the first six months, they barely made anything.

Then came the first breakthrough.

The First $50 That Changed Their Lives

Ironically, Kelan’s first dollar online didn’t come from affiliate marketing. It came from a sponsored post opportunity.

A company offered him $100 for a sponsored article.

“For some reason I felt bad taking $100,” Kelan laughed. “So I was like, no, $50 is fine.”

But that first payment changed his perspective forever.

“It was the spark that lit the fire,” he said. “We have an audience. Someone's willing to pay me to get in front of them.”

Shortly afterward, Kelan made the bold decision to leave law enforcement behind permanently.

“I was never gonna have another 9-to-5,” he said. “There was no real plan B.”

How Affiliate Marketing Became Their Main Revenue Stream

For years, affiliate marketing became the engine behind The Savvy Couple’s growth.

Kelan explained affiliate marketing in simple terms:

“You're basically taking products and services that you already love and use yourself… and if it solves a problem for them, you get paid a commission from it.”

Their content ranked highly in Google for popular search terms like side hustle ideas, work-from-home jobs, and ways to make extra money online.

As traffic grew, so did their income.

Eventually, the business grew large enough that Brittany could leave teaching too.

Kelan shared one moment that confirmed they were making the right move:

“The last month before Brittany resigned from teaching, we made more in that month than she made her entire year teaching.”

That kind of income transformation completely changed their family’s lifestyle.

The Real Goal Was Time Freedom

While the revenue numbers are impressive, what stood out most during our conversation was how often Kelan talked about freedom instead of money.

Freedom to homeschool their daughters.

Freedom to avoid alarm clocks.

Freedom to take walks in the afternoon.

Freedom to build a life around family instead of squeezing family around work.

That pursuit of time freedom is something I talk a lot about in my book Own Your Time.

Today, Kelan says he typically works around four hours per day.

“We earned the right to sleep in,” he joked.

The family also structures their workweek intentionally:

  • Monday through Wednesday: The Savvy Couple
  • Thursday: Brittany’s business, The Savvy Mama
  • Friday: Savvy Systems, their AI-focused local business software company

That structure allows them to stay productive without letting work dominate their lives.

The Google Update That Nearly Crushed Their Business

Like many online creators, Kelan’s business hit a massive obstacle when Google’s search algorithm shifted heavily toward large media companies and AI-generated search results.

At one point, their website traffic dropped from 350,000 monthly pageviews to around 50,000.

“It was a gut punch,” Kelan admitted.

Similar challenges have impacted creators across multiple industries. I recently spoke with travel blogger Corritta Lewis about how Google AI dramatically impacted her online business as well.

For nearly a year, Kelan wrestled with uncertainty and self-doubt.

But instead of giving up, Kelan pivoted.

That pivot included:

  • Growing YouTube and social media
  • Building recurring revenue streams
  • Investing in real estate
  • Launching AI-focused services for local businesses

The experience reinforced a lesson many entrepreneurs eventually learn:

The ability to adapt matters more than the original business model.

Why Kelan Believes Personal Brands Matter More Than Ever

One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was Kelan’s perspective on AI and content creation.

While AI disrupted parts of his business, he also sees massive opportunity for creators willing to evolve.

“I think everyone should be building a personal brand in this day and age,” he said. “Especially with AI taking so many jobs in the near future.”

His advice for beginners?

Start simple.

“Pull out your phone, open up TikTok and just start talking to the camera,” Kelan said. “Embrace the cringe.”

That may sound uncomfortable for many people, but his point is important: consistency and authenticity matter far more than perfection.

Real Estate Became Another Layer of Freedom

Like many entrepreneurs, Kelan diversified beyond digital income streams and began investing in real estate for additional cash flow and long-term wealth building.

Real estate investing has become a common strategy among financially independent entrepreneurs, similar to my conversation with Chad Carson on building rental property income.

For many families, reaching financial freedom starts with understanding their Coast FIRE number and building enough invested assets to let compound growth do the heavy lifting over time.

Retirement Looks Different Now

Before entrepreneurship, retirement meant surviving 20 years in a demanding career.

Now? Kelan doesn’t even know if he wants to fully retire.

“I’m so fulfilled with what I’m doing now,” he told me. “I can just see myself working part time for the rest of my life.”

That perspective shift may be the most powerful takeaway from his story.

When you build work around your values, your family, and your ideal lifestyle, retirement becomes less about escaping work and more about designing a life you don’t need to escape from.
